What is Joy?
12/12/2008 Full Moon
What is joy? Joy in the simple things? Being caught up in a moment or a wave of enjoyment? Sustaining this feeling and seeing the world through eyes of joy no matter what others seem to experience, or what passes?
Can our reality be truly filled with joy, and when we are bathed in its glow is it catching – do we not emanate it? Sharing our joy with others in turn lifts them to higher states – seeing blessings, rather than focusing on misgivings.
If Christmas is a time to spread joy and merriment and light up little faces, what gifts truly bring delight? Has each present been tainted with an expectation? Does disappointment sit ready, waiting to be called on, as anticipation fails to culminate in a surprise that brings a happy tear to our eyes?
What do we expect? And is this a measure of our worth and the sum of our own disappointments, as we believe our needs are not met? Does it mean we are loved and accepted if we are showered with another’s attentions? What do we really require to be satisfied?
Only a moment of reflection, surely? A different way of seeing. A pause. The time it takes to count our blessings one by one, and to celebrate all that is ours.
Provided by Mother Nature. Warmed by the benevolent rays of the sun. Carefully cradled by the soils of this Earth – every seed of life comes to fruition. The rains nourishing, and bringing growth. Each and every child of the Earth welcomed with open arms just as each new day bursts forth – as light emerges from the Void and all awaken.
Is this not joy itself? Being alive to taste the myriad experiences of life. Joy in its purest form – the essence of love.
